Education Trumped in USA?

Education Trumped? –

l

One of the most discussed topics among our student community – especially those looking towards US – is the effect of education getting ‘trampled’ under the incoming Presidency of Trump.

How untrue! Are we not counting the birds before they are hatched?

The US Government makes 32 billion dollars per year from international students who study in USA. Nothing will displease the new Government or its President if this comes down. It is a fact that the policies as laid out by Trump are mostly towards illegal immigrants and curbing excessive issue of work visas for foreign nationals. With the waves of ‘nationalism’ sweeping world-wide, it is imperative that Trump has to consider supporting the domestic work force and accept the alternatives next.

It is also equally imperative that ‘skilled’ work force – especially in the IT field – is hard to get just like that! Even if you get some, the work force (domestic) is so pricey!! Countries like India, with its knowledgeable, competitive and highly cost-effective work force is the most attractive catch for any country, looking to cut costs and save pennies. So, if you restrict employment opportunities for international labor (aka work force), the ever-so-sensitive Indians will not consider studying in the USA, which is their penultimate step to become a part of the American dream. With India sending the second highest number of students to USA after China, it is difficult to ignore the dangers of restricting international students from studying and subsequent employment.

‘No education’ step will lead to ‘no employment’, which will ultimately lead to so many complications for the US economy. There is no way any reasonable bureaucrat or politician will affect their own country by their own actions.  In other words, as long as Indian students study hard and work harder for a cost-effective pay, they will always be in demand. And they cannot be ‘trumped’.

Online education USA, anyone? –

Quite frequently, we receive enquiries if international students could do online courses while they are within the USA.

As you know, online courses are those programs which the students could complete without attending college and in fact, without their presence in the city or country where the college is offering. This is becoming one of the popular forms of learning for many students across the world because of several reasons – convenience, flexibility, lower costs, better education and comfort of learning from their homes.

Most of the institutions around the world (colleges and universities) are offering online courses for students world-wide. In other words, education has become an entity without borders – whoever it may be – irrespective of age, experience and previous education – can take up a course, complete it and obtain a diploma or degree with ease and convenience.

So, what is stopping you from taking up online education in USA, when you are within USA? The rules governing a student visa (F1 Visa) are quite simple and straight-forward. If you want to study in USA, get a visa for full-time education. Since online education is literally part-time, students cannot meet the visa conditions and therefore, cannot do online courses when studying in USA full-time.

What are the rules governing full-time education in USA? If a student enrolls for 9 credit hours per semester at the Master’s level and 12 credit hours per semester at the Bachelor’s level, he is considered to be ‘in-status’ – a legal, full-time international student. Any one doing less than those prescribed here will be treated as “out of status”, which will bar them from staying back in USA to study on F1 visa.  So, literally, international students can only study full-time in US universities and cannot do online (part-time) courses.

Is there no option to do some course of interest, online? Yes, that is possible. Students can do ONE course per semester part-time or online. This course can be used towards completion of the program (Bachelor’s or Master’s) or to gain knowledge in an unrelated field.

It might be tempting to think that since the online courses are offered part-time, they might be cheaper and cost effective. Unfortunately, NO. The cost of online courses are as costly as class-room courses in most of the US universities.  This is why, though there is an option to do at least one course, international students especially from India, do not prefer to study online.

One strong reason is the fact that Indian students are hard-working. They want to immerse in the class room experience and gain full advantage from such learning, training, and networking opportunities. What can they benefit by staying back in their accommodations and learning one or more courses online? According to a majority of students, Nothing! So, full-time education within the classrooms is the most popular form of learning for our students from India.

When are you joining them in USA?

Have a great December.
