Which is Better – Higher Studies in Abroad or India?

India is the second largest market after China that sends students to study abroad every year. The trend is on the upswing as more than 50% of India’s current population of 1.32 billion is below 25 years.

Why are more students increasingly making the crossover to the International colleges and universities?

1. Global Ranking

No Indian university including the IITs and IIMs has a global ranking in the Top 200. The Indian Institute of Science (IISC) figures in the 250-300 rank.

The competition for admission to Indian institutes is much higher than even a top 20 universities in the world.

Also, the cost of seats under the management quota for professional colleges in India is unregulated in India and highly costly. Some times, it is less expensive to study in the top ranking universities abroad than in much less reputed colleges in India.

When it comes to costs and return on your education investment, unfortunately in India, even in popular streams like science and engineering (specifically research), the pay in after doing Masters is meager.

You can safely trust most of the universities abroad as they have an excellent standard of education, maintained by the educational, regulatory bodies of the country.

2. Admission Process

Getting admission to India’s premier institutes like the Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) or Indian Institute of Technology ( IITs) are highly competitive and stressful.

It is indeed a dog or rat race from start to finish when studying in the Indian education system. The rat race gets even more intense in the popular streams of study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)

Note this – On an average, an Indian student has lower than one in 50% chance in gaining admission to a highly reputed institute of technology and business.

The high cut-off marks for national level exams such as the Joint Entrance Exams (JEE mains) for engineering colleges, National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) for medical colleges and Common Aptitude Tests (CAT) for management colleges can demotivate even the brightest students to give up hope on securing admission to a course and college of their choice.

Studying abroad is a much easier and streamlined process which brings hope and lots of career opportunities for Indian students. Admission to a highly-ranked college or university abroad is comparatively easier right from the undergraduate level.

No wonder, an increasing number of Indian students are choosing to take the big leap and make the crossover for their undergraduate studies.

While there are exams like GRE, TOEFL/IELTS, and GMAT, the syllabus for these exams is relatively simple. Also, it is only one exam that you have to give, unlike Indian national level exams. The admission requirement for selecting the students is also different for each university abroad raising your chances of making to a college of high reputation and standing.

3. Quality of Education

While it is true that the standard of Indian education is evolving, there is still a lot of development that needs to be done.

One of the most significant grey areas is the lack of opportunities for the practical application of theoretical knowledge and skills gained through conceptual understanding. Little wonder that lakhs of Indian students are unemployable struggling to get job placements after graduation.

The problem is not with the student but the Indian education system where the emphasis is on rote learning to remember concepts rather than understanding them. Classroom experience is limited to classroom lectures with little to no class participation. Maintain a good attendance record is the top concern for both faculty and students with little or no interest in either teaching or learning.

Students interested in pursuing research do not receive enough support from Indian institutes in terms of finance, infrastructure, and resources.

The student’s natural curiosity is crushed under the high academic pressure from Indian schools and colleges, leaving no room for innovative thinking and development.

In contrast, there is a lot of focus on student-driven learning, engaging them in the active learning process via class participation, discussions, case studies, and practical off- and on-campus experiences that make learning a fun, productive and meaningful experience.

Universities abroad provide abundant resources such as sophisticated technology, equipment, and infrastructure which encourage and motivate students to conduct in-depth research.

There is a lot of focus on creative thinking and innovation in the education system abroad which organically builds a student’s self-esteem and confidence levels. Studying abroad polishes your soft skills, and allows you to focus on your hobbies ranging from mountaineering to painting which isn’t given as much importance in India.

4. Flexible Curriculum

In India, the focus is only on the popular STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) courses. Very few options are available for students who are interested in pursuing other streams of education. Even if their desired course is available, the school does not have the expertise and accreditation to prepare its students for a more prosperous career path.

The sheer range and variety of courses available to students abroad in countries like USA, UK, Canada or Australia are mind-boggling. You are sure to find a course of your interest in a reputed college and universities abroad in the most unconventional and contemporary subjects like sports, baking, psychology, filmmaking or entertainment with greater scope and structure. You may end up with a diploma if you study these courses in India. But abroad, you will study in-depth and have a fully accredited Bachelor’s Degree which holds a lot of value in your field of interest.

As a student studying abroad, you can opt for ‘dual major’, ‘minor’ and ‘free electives’ when choosing a course and allowing you to specialize in diverse subjects. You could be doing your masters in engineering with few credits in accounting and marketing as well. It throws open more career doors for you in various streams in the global markets.

Apart from flexibility in courses, universities abroad gives you the freedom to work on a part-time basis while pursuing your education. Many universities abroad allow international students to work on campus, and off-campus.

5. Emigration

When you study and work in India, emigrating to a country of your choice becomes tougher.

But if emigration is one of your goals for better prospects for your career and family, then it makes sense to start early and look to study abroad at the graduate level. Many countries like the USA, Canada, and Australia offer attractive job prospects after graduation, and their flexible immigration rules allow students to look for employment after completing their studies.

80% of students from India and other Asian countries choose to remain in the USA after completing their graduate and doctoral studies according to the latest US National Science Foundation’s Survey.

Obtaining permanent residence abroad becomes easier once a job is secured, helps gain access to higher salaries leading to a better lifestyle and facilities.

Conclusion

Studying abroad is the clear winner here as there is a vast difference in the quality of education between the Indian and International institutions. It is the better option out of the two.

Today, you have various funding and scholarship opportunities available for your benefit. The benefits of an international education help you build a stable and secure career and future.

USA Number ONE Always

Despite Trump’s rhetoric and temporary panic amongst students, USA has attracted highest number of international students from all over the world even in 2016-17.

As compared to 10.43 lakh students in 15-16, more than 10.78 lakh students went for higher education to USA in 2016-17, which is a net increase of 3.4%.

More than 1.86 lakh Indian students went to study in US, which is an increase of 12.3%, when compared to the previous year.

California has attracted the maximum number of international students, followed by New York and Texas. Massachusetts and Illinois have stood next after these three states.

Among the US universities, New York University attracted the maximum number – 17,326, followed by University of Southern California (14,327 and Columbia University (14,095).

Surprisingly, undergraduate students are more in number (about 2.7 percent increase) than Graduate students, who have increased by only 1.9%.

Coming to funding, 60% of international students came with personal and family funds. Another 16% have come with savings from their current employment. Universities have contributed funds for 15% of the international students.

Finally, Engineering is the most popular field of study, with 21.4% of the students preferring the same, followed by Business & Management 18.6% and Math & Computer Science, 15.5%.

While other countries like Australia and Canada have benefitted from the tumult in between, the above figures prove beyond doubt that USA is always the best in quality of education, employment opportunities and finally a great and safe future for students!

Manhattan Review India is in the forefront of promoting international education, especially education in USA. We strongly promote educational opportunities in Germany, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and UK. Bachelor’s education – USA or Europe?

a

Given the stark differences between the education systems in USA and Europe and the lack of proper information to study (at the Bachelor’s level) in Europe, it is important to know facts about studying in either of these locations.

General Education is considered as ‘essential’ in US universities, which covers a broad range of programs such as Music, photography, sports and many other co-curricular and extra-curricular fields of activity. This will impart a strong base of students to study a wide range of programs – not only those that are academically important, but also personally interesting. Additionally, general education emphasizes skills such as writing and critical thinking and expose students to a variety of subject areas. Also, students can choose a major after two years of studying, in the meanwhile explore their field of interest.

In European countries, this type of general education is not available and students who are joining the Bachelor’s programs are expected to ‘choose’ a focus area while applying for colleges. This will severely restrict the learning capability of students who may want to explore more areas and wider fields of learning to decide on their career direction.  While it helps to choose a subject from the start and able to focus on those areas in-depth and prepare for the job market or for continuing onto a master’s degree, it also has its disadvantages”.

European bachelor’s degrees are three-year programs that are too structured, which doesn’t give students a lot of freedom to explore.

Also, ‘liberal arts’ education emphasizing on learning in subjects such as social sciences, arts, and humanities are available in all US universities/colleges, whereas European universities rarely offer such an option. This restricts the learning ability and choice of students, who want to explore multiple options before they decide on a particular ‘major’ or specialization to continue with their studies. Of course, for international students who are ready with a focus, going for a 3-year degree, directly into their chosen field of study could be an advantage.

Another advantage is US colleges is the scope to internationalize their learning, participation in various events through student-clubs and a better campus life. Comparatively, European colleges offer limited scope for such wider participation and exposure.

Most importantly, except in the UK, almost all other countries offer education in their native language (non-English), which is a major deterrent for Bachelor’s applicants. While most European universities are offering Master’s level education in English, very few are offering at the Bachelor’s level. Such problem does not exist in US universities since the medium of education is only English.

Finally, for those international students with merit, financial aid is possible even at the Bachelor’s level in most US universities. Though rare and difficult, funding is a good possibility for top-performing students here. Whereas, in Europe, financial aid is virtually difficult, if not impossible.

It is therefore important for international students to choose the country/continent to make a very informed decision to invest huge sums of money into their education and ultimately their career.

MBA in other destinations

A survey reveals that the percentage of non-US citizens who say they are now less likely to study in the US has grown to 43% in April 2017 from 35% in November 2016. Similarly, a country-level analysis has revealed that Indian candidates are negatively influenced by the Brexit vote, with 58% reporting that it has made them less likely to study in the UK.

Countries such as Canada, Australia, Germany and New Zealand seem to be gaining from the waning sentiment towards the top two education destinations due to the closed climate.

A recent Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) survey states almost 59% of the applicants intend to apply for programs outside their home country.

Most students look to study abroad to receive a higher quality education (63% of the respondents), to increase their chances of securing international employment (58%), and to expand their international connections (51%).

Finally, 61% of the candidates think that MBA is ‘THE’ degree to aim and achieve – whether from USA or any other top destination in the world.

Some important facts about why should you study in USA

study-in-usa1

  1. A major source of funding for US universities is non-residential fee paid by graduate and undergraduate students in the STEM courses. Every year, more than ONE MILLION international students get into US to study.
  2. STEM courses are Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics courses, which are preferred by most Indian students, to study in USA.
  3. OPT, CPT, H1B Visa are all work related programs especially benefitting STEM graduates.
  4. If we assume what rumor mongers say, and think that H1B visas will not be issued for International students, then think about the repercussions.
  5. Number of applications to the Universities will go down, which will cut the funding of these universities and thus affecting the operations.
  6. These are not desirable results for any economy that intends to grow, for which about 32 Billion Dollars is spent by International students alone, every year. And most importantly The United States would know that for sure.
  7. Thus the US Government says that they need high skilled students to study in the US, work and contribute to the US economy.

So, believe in yourself and your goals; this is the best time to deep dive for a Master’s degree in USA. This is the BEST TIME TO STUDY IN USA!

11 Reasons – Why do Students need a Consultant for MBA and MS admissions?

Manhattan Review India

In today’s highly competitive world it is of prime importance that one should get professional help to stay ahead of the pack. Professional admission consultants are immensely significant in this regard as they know lot of strategies which helps students in maximizing their chances so that they do not lose out.

Our point is – If you do not take professional help, there is a high chance that your competitors (other students) are doing so to gain advantage over you.

Read on to know how professional admission consultants can help you outshine others.

  1. The Insider’s Edge

It is always good to have somebody who knows what it takes to get into the elite B-Schools and top universities. A second professional opinion always helps. They know the ways through which you can brighten your chances of earning an interview call. Our point is, if help is available, why not take it. Getting a bit of advice from friend or two provides very limited and probably obsolete information.

  1. Short on time

Almost everybody has lot of multiple roles to play in our daily lives. Therefore it is only a matter of time, when students should seek professional help to manage the entire admission schedule.

  1. First Timers need it, Second timers need it even more

Now, if you are applying for the first time, an admission consultant helps you in getting your dream college, making your life easy in the process. They help you save time on online research. Admission consultants become even more significant, especially when students are applying for second or third time as you do not want to commit the same mistake again.

  1. If your weakness column is heavier

If you feel that there are a lot of areas where you are weak and need professional help, then without wasting any time you should consult an admission consultant to iron out the flaws. Better to act before it is too late.

  1. Even great players need coaches

We have handled several students in the past who were brilliant in academics, had an excellent percentage, a high GMAT/GRE score. However they got rejected because the other important parts of the application forms were not covered properly and after they came to us. So professional advice always helps.

  1. Extensive research about schools

You might have zeroed in a good school but it may happen that your particular choice of subject is being taught better in some other good school. Let a professional help you in getting it right for you. You need to cross the line within a stipulated time and time flies too soon.

  1. Professional approach

Professional consultants have good amount of experience behind them, so you can seek advice for maximization of your chances. Take advantage of free assessment tests, whenever you get it.

  1. Training for VISA Interview

All of us are aware how difficult it is to clear the VISA interview. And especially with norms being stricter it is always advisable to have some training under your belt before the show down. A must for those who have never faced any VISA interview in their lives or have been repeatedly rejected.

  1. Admission consultants are a good alternative to Admission Officers

During the entire process, you will have lot of questions but you cannot expect the admission officer to answer all of them. Admission consultants know a great deal about schools and since they charge you some money, therefore they will be more than ready to solve any of your queries and you know help is nearby, whenever you need.

  1. Post Sales Service

Some of the admission consultants like Manhattan Review even offer after admission services like Pre-departure orientation, Foreign Exchange and Travel assistance, different Dos and Don’ts checklists etc. It is a great value addition especially for those who are first timers in the US academic world.

  1. Finally, the most important reason

You should be committed for the entire process – right from free counseling, test preparation to pre-departure orientation. This will optimize your whole experience and benefit you from the total services offered by companies like Manhattan Review.  Then only would you be taking advantage of the experience, expertise and the large network of Manhattan Review.

What next, apart from USA?

What next, apart from USA-

Indian (even other international) students are very worried about the situation in USA, where the proposed legislations might affect their ‘employability’ chances and the opportunity to gain meaningful work experience in addition to the possibility of making a career/life in USA.

As far as education is concerned, there are absolutely no restrictions to study in USA – in good universities and programs. However, it is always best to plan for self-funding for the first semester (tuition and living) rather than looking for part-time jobs and other funding opportunities. It is expected (by the US government) that those who plan to study in USA, must be self-sufficient financially and should not depend upon jobs and doles. This trend will help students to get entry into USA if they show adequate proof of funds for their education.

Coming to employment after education (OPT), a major concern is about the proposal to restrict the same (OPT) to one year, instead of three years (for STEM program students) This effectively means that students can stay back for 12 months after their education, instead of 36 months. Please note however, that this is only a proposal and has not been made a law yet.

So, what are the options for Indian students who wish to avoid USA and look for other countries?

Canada is one country which is safer, equally good (for education), cheaper and more stable politically. Importantly, almost all programs/courses are available as in the US universities.

The biggest advantage for students is that they can stay back for THREE years in Canada, after their education, with a post-graduation work permit. This will help students to not only gain work experience but also use it for permanent residence (PR).

Obviously, Canada will be the best bet for education and settlement, as an alternative to USA.

Germany permits extension of visas to students for a period of one and half years (1.5 years) after their education. Students will have unrestricted access for employment, during this 1.5 year period.  While there is limited possibility to settle down in Germany after education and employment, the world-class education, coupled with rich work experience will provide students with opportunities world-wide for better prospects.

All said and done, USA is always the best destination in terms of education, flexibility, jobs, full-time employment opportunities and settlement. Moreover, with Trump’s proposal to offer ‘merit-based immigration’ to people who want to settle in USA (like Canada and Australia), USA becomes all the more attractive, notwithstanding the stray incidents that are troubling Indians.

So, choose your country carefully with your long-term goals in view. Manhattan Review (MR) will be pleased to provide you with more information and help you make a proper decision on your plans of studying abroad.  Meet our counselors at a center nearest to you.
