A recent Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) survey states almost 59% of the applicants intend to apply for programs outside their home country.

Most students look to study abroad to receive a higher quality education (63% of the respondents), to increase their chances of securing international employment (58%), and to expand their international connections (51%).

Computer Science or Information Technology?

Computer Science or Information Technology?

Untitled design (24)

This is a million dollar question for many students who wish to pursue higher education abroad, in any of these streams/specializations.

The main reason for the confusion especially for Indian students is the fact that here, universities offer different fields of study such as – Computer Science, Computer Science Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering etc. Each of these specializations have similar subjects/courses of study except for a few electives in order to ‘specialize’ and graduate.  As a result, many, many students are really confused to choose a particular field of study – Computer Science or Information Technology or Software Engineering et al.

How to break this logjam? Obviously, the first question one should answer oneself is whether to become a programmer or a solution provider for problems with current technology.

Computer science students are mostly taught programming and hence they become Software Programmers, Software Engineers, Project Managers, Application Developers, Cloud Technology related fields, Software Testers etc.

Whereas, IT students are taught to become Web developers & designers, Data Security Officers, Data Managers, Software Developers and IT Engineers.

The topics mostly taught in the IT stream are Database Management Systems, Operating Systems, Basic and Advanced Computer Networks, Software Engineering, Computer Architecture and design, Data Structures, Internet tools, Information Security, Object Oriented Design, and Data Warehousing etc. Advanced courses include Artificial Intelligence, Mobile Computing, Human Computer Interaction, Distributed Systems etc.

As already mentioned earlier, both CS and IT graduates are taught most of the subjects in common. However, in the United States (and in Canada also), the subjects taught under IT are offered as specializations under the Department of Computer Science and vice versa!

So, how do you choose the ‘right’ specialization at the Master’s level? It should not be based on what you have studied at the Bachelor’s level, but on what you would like to study at the Master’s level!!

For example, you might have done a B.Tech in IT, but have work experience of about 2 years in Big Data. You want to gain further knowledge in the same field (Big Data) for your growth. Which field should you choose? Some universities offer ‘Big Data’ under the Department of Computer Science and some others, under the Department of Business/IT, under the specialization of ‘Management Information Systems’. These keep changing from one university to another.

Therefore, the BEST WAY is to decide on your future field of work and look for education (at the Master’s level) that help you reach that goal. If you want to be a programmer, go for CS. If you want to be hardware specialist, go for Computer Engineering. If you want to be a solution specialist, go for IT, etc.

Make a proper choice at the time of starting your applications to universities. Once you join a wrong program, you would waste time on unrelated subjects and money on transferring to another field of study.

This is where, the expertise of Manhattan Review comes useful. We will counsel you to choose the right program and guide you with the selection of universities, admission process, applying, follow up, documentation and finally the visa process. In other words, right from A to Z of your plans of studying abroad.

Do You Know the Costly Cities to Study Around the Globe?

Costly cities to study!

do-you-know-the-costly-cities-to-study

Here are a survey (by Savills, The Telegraph) results about the top cities in the world where education costs are compared.

Following are the costliest cities in the world to study, overall:

1.Boston

boston

2. New York (NY)

new-york-ny

3. San Francisco (SFO)

sfo

4. Chicago

chicago

5. London

london

6. Sydney

sydney

7. Melbourne

melbourne

8. Madrid

madrid

9. Bristol

bristol

10. Manchester

manchester

Among the above, for tuition costs, Chicago is the costliest, followed by San Francisco and New York.

For Accommodation, London, New York, San Francisco and Boston are the costlier ones.

For living expenditure, NY, SFO, Boston and Chicago are the ones that burn a hole in the pockets.

Interestingly, Munich (Germany), Beijing (China), Berlin (Germany) and Shanghai (China) are cheaper in costs among all the countries surveyed.

Other costs while studying abroad:

while on the topic of costs, its good idea to examine what other costs students have to be prepared to meet, while they study abroad.

Fees – While many use the words ‘tuition’ and ‘fees’ interchangeably, both are different. ‘Fees’ include a lot of other costs like Laboratory usage, Library, Sports, Graduate Activities, Technology fees, Transportation, Health Insurance etc.

All the above ‘fees’ are in addition to the tuition that university charges and are common for all students – both domestic and international. While some universities may have lesser ‘fees’, some will have higher costs, depending on the location, reputation, facilities etc. Perhaps the biggest ‘fee’ cost for an international student is the ‘Health Insurance., which could be anywhere between US $ 1500 to 2,000 per year.

Books and accommodation costs are indicated as costly. But, practically, these costs could be lesser depending on where one takes up accommodation and where & how one obtains books.

Please note that in USA, tuition is always charged ‘per credit hour’ for all students. Depending on the number of credit hours a student takes up per semester, universities calculate the total and provide a ‘ball park’ figure towards tuition per year (for two semesters). This figure will not be accurate, since students may decide on taking more or less number of credits per semester. However, the ‘fees’ remain constant for all, per semester.

So, be aware of the different types of expenditure and plan accordingly. Don’t feel alarmed at the costs mentioned in the I-20. You will always be able to reduce your expenditure by saving on items like books, accommodation and even tuition (if you reduce your credit hours per semester). At Manhattan Review, we always guide you with such relevant information to make your overseas education affordable and cost-effective.

Great News!

Our students have started getting F-1 (student) visas to USA for Spring intake. Because we helped them to apply early, they got admission quickly and got the visas early too. This will avoid last minute rush and non-availability of visa slots, costly air fares and last minute hassles.

Jump on Manhattan Review’s wings. We will fly you straight to your choicest university’s door-step in quick time and land you into “Land of Unlimited opportunities” very soon.

Are you ready to fly?

Wish you and your family members a very Happy and Safe Diwali.

GRE – High score but no admit?

05%2f10%2f19

Application advise This is the time of the year, when most of you take the tests (GRE/GMAT and TOEFL/IELTS) and want to apply to universities. Two very important things have to be kept in mind while you are getting ready with taking tests and applying.

  • You will be very close to deadlines of most universities which admit better-profile students. As a result, you will be under pressure to meet the application deadlines. This will put additional pressure on your test preparation, which might affect your scores. There is no need to emphasize the fact that lower scores will bring down admission chances in good universities. Therefore, if you are planning to take tests, schedule quality time for test preparation and leave the applying part to professionals like Manhattan Review.
  • When thousands of students apply to universities around the same time, it puts a lot of pressure on the admission committees, graduate schools (which issues I-20s) and the departments (which consider your financial aid) In many cases, pressure gets to them too and some admissions may not be based on proper evaluation. Result, genuine and strong applicants might be affected badly. Where you had definitely expected admission, such universities may ‘reject’ with or without reason. The ultimate loser will be the applicant who falls in that ‘application zone’. What is the solution to this? Apply as early as the universities permit. Arrange for your application material to be submitted even later (but definitely, well before the deadlines). This will give ‘breathing time’ for universities to consider your applications but put them on hold. After all the materials are received, it takes much shorter time for universities to process your application and give a decision.

Remember, the following are myths which you SHOULD NOT CONSIDER.

  1. That even without test scores, universities will decide on application – No, unless all the materials and scores are in place, they will not decide.
  1. That without the final transcripts, one cannot apply – Again, wrong. Even with the 6th or 7th semester transcript also, one could apply and still get a favourable decision if everything is done properly, carefully and in time.
  1. That applying to more universities will increase admission chances – Well, that depends on which universities one is applying to. If one applies to just one university, he might get admission. Applying to ten may not necessarily mean that one might get more admits. Not necessarily! So, be judicious with your selection and number of universities you wish to apply to. This is where the expertise of Manhattan Review comes in.

One piece of advice – don’t fall into the trap of ‘know all’ masters (some of your friends or seniors) and/or the internet knowledge.  While you get a lot of ‘free’ and ‘unwarranted’ advice, that might not be the RIGHT Advice for you. Be careful with the loads of information you obtain from many sources. Finally, make a prudent decision to seek the help of experts who charge you, but also recharge your career – academically – for a fabulous future. Don’t you want to have a great life after your education?

GRE – High score but no admit? Many students have a very painful experience of having good/high score in GRE but denied admission in universities in which they ‘thought’ they could get in. The ‘Quant’ section score is high, the ‘Verbal’ section score is decent. Where could the applicant have done wrong? Why were they rejected when they were ‘sure’ of admission?

The devil lurks deep in a seemingly unimportant section – the AWA. While preparing for the tests or talking with seniors, it is not highlighted with enough emphasis that the Analytical Written Assessment section score is equally or more important not only for admission but also for an assistantship. As a result, students don’t prepare well for this section and the average for most Indian students is about 2.5 to 3.0 out of 6. Unfortunately, this score is insufficient for most US universities to consider for admission and assistantships. So, a ‘rejection’ will be sent to students after review. By the time a rejection is received, deadlines for other universities will be almost over and students will not have any option but to go for universities that are much less compatible with their profile. The result? Poor education, non- compatible degree and finally a bad start to the career. Is this required? Should they not know what is important and concentrate for a better score to improve admission and aid chances?

This is exactly what Manhattan Review strives to educate and concentrate upon (while preparing students for the tests). We encourage students to practice more, get trained better and score better. If they score 4 and above in the AWA section, the chances will be very BRIGHT! If the chances are bright, the future is brighter. This is why you are looking for education abroad. Right?

Colours and Crackers We are in the midst of festive season. The colourful Dasara and the soundful and bright Diwali are here for our enjoyment. Perhaps, this will be one of the festive seasons you would spend in India for some years to come. Once abroad, the gaiety and celebrations galore will not be as ‘original’ as you could find them in our motherland. So, make the most of this season by celebrating Dasara and Diwali with your near and dear ones. Have an unforgettable time. Wish you and your family members a VERY (Belated)  HAPPY VIJAYA DASAMI AND DIWALI.

Finland not free anymore

Finland, not free anymore – Till January, education in Finland for international students was free. The Finland government has passed a resolution to make the international student fee-paying, with effect from 1st January 2016.

Fee-payment will be applicable for both Bachelor’s and Master’s level international students. By this addition (of tuition), the cost of education in Finland becomes very high, since the cost of living is among the highest in European countries.

Official government statistics indicate that there were a total of 19,880 foreign students enrolled in degree programs at Finnish universities and polytechnics in 2014. Nearly eight in ten of those students (77% or 15,330 in total) were international.

Assistantships: a practical advice Many of you are ready to leave for USA shortly. While some of you may have got funding in the form of scholarships and tuition waivers, many would want to know about other resources to help them with their education expenditure.

How to obtain assistantships? As you may know, there are different types of assistantships – Teaching, Research and Administrative. These are available to students who contact the professors and convince them of their ability to assist him/her (the Professor) with his/her teaching or research. If you have high TOEFL and/or Verbal section scores in GRE, you could approach the professors to become a Teaching Assistant (TA). If you are keen on spending long hours to help with research, you could certainly consider becoming a Research Assistant (RA). And, if you have typing or coding skills or any other that could help with the administration of a department, you could apply for an Administrative Assistant positon. With an assistantship, your tuition could be completely waived and you may be paid a stipend to cover your living expenditure costs. This means, you need not spend any money for your education or living!

Mind you, it is not necessary to apply for any of these positions within the department you have obtained admission. You could also apply to other departments too. For your efforts to be effective and successful, use the regulations. You can travel up to 30 days before your classes starting date. Use that time to explore your and other departments and hit the jackpot!!

GMAT and GRE: exciting events and offers Manhattan Review’s Mega GRE event blasted off the ground to reach a new high. Many students across Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka are taking advantage of our workshops and discovering life-changing information and services. Free demo. Classes, discounted fees, group discounts and customized packages for students are on offer during the mega sessions. Are you a part of the mega event? Have you taken advantage? If not, meet your counselor and find out how we could offer better services for you at a discounted price. If you have already taken advantage, inform your friends and classmates. Let them also benefit from your magnanimity.
