How do I write an effective SOP for Master’s Program in Computer Science?

NO TIME Reading Content Just Click Video Blog

There are several ways to write a strong SOP for MS in Computer Science. But writing an effective one to get enrolment in one of the top colleges and schools are given below:

Keep focus on MS Specialization

The most important subject to remember is to keep MS specialization in your mind before you start writing your SOP(Statement of Purpose). It is better to highlight your specialization in MS in the first part of the SOP. The main cause is that it brings to the limelight the specialization you want to pursue in MS. It points to the purpose of your ambition to get enrolment in a specific course to have a successful career. For example, you want to pursue MS in Computer Science. If so, your SOP must reflect the reasons for deciding on why you want to take up MS.

MS in Computer Science

The SOP must go like this. During my schooling, I was always was drawn towards the subject of applied sciences and computer programming. I was amazed at the amount of task a computer could perform. The speed, memory, and ability of multi-tasking. Moreover, the high-end versions of computers brought a revolution in the life of human being.

To quote Late Steve Jobs, “The computer is the most remarkable tool that we have ever come up with. It’s the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds”. Therefore, on every occasion, I went to the library I studied books on computer programming, including the sources that explained the core details and operations of a computer. The infinite ways it performs to do things that a human mind can explore with it.

Thereafter, you need to reflect on the core reason for doing MS in Computer Science. You need to begin explaining about your interest in the subject of schooling. Move on to reveal on why computer programming and applied sciences impressed you most.

Example:

In my undergraduate studies in __________, I went into the practical part of _________ in detail in the classroom, then as a research assistant and my internship in companies. After summer, I worked in a technology firm in engineering _______________. I worked on several projects. Here, I was able to get a broad outlook on the subject.

Create an angle

Write the reasons pointwise. Give a thorough analysis of each point. Pinpoint the best reason to highlight a point and explain it. It can purely academic or personal. It may be in reference to a particular interest that made you make a choice of MS in Computer Science.

Example:

In school, I worked on a project on Physics. I had to use circuit elements to construct logic gates and latches. The Power of Electrical and Electronics was really amazing. I was willing to give a major part of my time to understand it in complete detail.

US, UK and Australia Universities

The universities in US, UK and Australia, including other nations in Europe, do sometimes ask for working experience to doing your graduation there. It could be in the form of internship or work experience. Your learning experience must be addressed in the SOP. Give in points how they were an influence on the critical reasoning skills and what was learned in pursuing them for fulfilling your life ambitions. A highlight of your performance and appreciation can be mentioned as well.

Example:

I understood the necessity of the industry to employ me, which motivated me to accept the chance after graduation. My role as a Software Engineer at _______________  ( industry name ) was a very good opportunity to get training. I got a good amount of experience in information management.

Australia – ‘fair play’ with international students –

Many international students were exploited in workplaces and their visas were rescinded automatically by the DIBP, Government of Australia. Recently, the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) has introduced new and key initiatives to safeguard the interests of international students in Australia.

Key amongst the initiatives announced was an arrangement between FWO and visa-agency DIBP to no longer automatically cancel a student’s visa if they have violated its terms during an instance of workplace exploitation.

A common method of exploitation has been to coerce a student into working over the 40-hours per fortnight permitted under a study visa and then threaten to report them to DIBP if they do not accept lower wages or longer hours, preventing many students from reporting exploitation.

This initiative comes after research commissioned by FWO which found many international students were not aware of their workplace rights, with some reporting they were subjected to “intimidation by their employers, who threatened to deport or “blacklist” them for future work if they complained”.

Now that this sort of ‘exploitation’ is stopped, international students can breathe easy and look forward to studying in Australia with more enthusiasm.  Manhattan Review provides FREE admission services to students for their application and admission process in Australian universities. Bachelor’s education – USA or Europe?

a

Given the stark differences between the education systems in USA and Europe and the lack of proper information to study (at the Bachelor’s level) in Europe, it is important to know facts about studying in either of these locations.

General Education is considered as ‘essential’ in US universities, which covers a broad range of programs such as Music, photography, sports and many other co-curricular and extra-curricular fields of activity. This will impart a strong base of students to study a wide range of programs – not only those that are academically important, but also personally interesting. Additionally, general education emphasizes skills such as writing and critical thinking and expose students to a variety of subject areas. Also, students can choose a major after two years of studying, in the meanwhile explore their field of interest.

In European countries, this type of general education is not available and students who are joining the Bachelor’s programs are expected to ‘choose’ a focus area while applying for colleges. This will severely restrict the learning capability of students who may want to explore more areas and wider fields of learning to decide on their career direction.  While it helps to choose a subject from the start and able to focus on those areas in-depth and prepare for the job market or for continuing onto a master’s degree, it also has its disadvantages”.

European bachelor’s degrees are three-year programs that are too structured, which doesn’t give students a lot of freedom to explore.

Also, ‘liberal arts’ education emphasizing on learning in subjects such as social sciences, arts, and humanities are available in all US universities/colleges, whereas European universities rarely offer such an option. This restricts the learning ability and choice of students, who want to explore multiple options before they decide on a particular ‘major’ or specialization to continue with their studies. Of course, for international students who are ready with a focus, going for a 3-year degree, directly into their chosen field of study could be an advantage.

Another advantage is US colleges is the scope to internationalize their learning, participation in various events through student-clubs and a better campus life. Comparatively, European colleges offer limited scope for such wider participation and exposure.

Most importantly, except in the UK, almost all other countries offer education in their native language (non-English), which is a major deterrent for Bachelor’s applicants. While most European universities are offering Master’s level education in English, very few are offering at the Bachelor’s level. Such problem does not exist in US universities since the medium of education is only English.

Finally, for those international students with merit, financial aid is possible even at the Bachelor’s level in most US universities. Though rare and difficult, funding is a good possibility for top-performing students here. Whereas, in Europe, financial aid is virtually difficult, if not impossible.

It is therefore important for international students to choose the country/continent to make a very informed decision to invest huge sums of money into their education and ultimately their career.

USA – Study, training and Work: Latest updates

USA - Study, training and Work- Latest updates

There are a lot of misconceptions and rumors that are circulating amongst the international student community, who wish to study and later work in USA.

In this Newsletter, we are looking at the ‘actual’ and practical information given by successful applicants for USA H1B Visa.

Quite a few Indian applicants who have studied their Master’s in USA and have been working in the USA after their Optional Practical Training have visited India in recent times and applied for H1B Visa.

Almost all the applicants have their H1B visas approved for THREE YEARS.

From our conversation with some of them, it was clear that the visa interview was mostly about if they (the applicant) had studied in USA and working with a company directly, instead of through consultants.

Also, there was a discussion with the US Consulate staff, in one of the popular news channels. The officials have categorically stated that there will be absolutely no problem for students to study and work in USA.

What does all this mean?

  • For genuine students who want to obtain international qualifications from USA, the doors are always open.
  • There are NO RESTRICTIONS on students to obtain Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT) at all. In other words, no changes in law have been envisaged for CPT or OPT.
  • If the students obtain an American Degree in USA, they will be eligible to apply for H1B visa. As per a proposal, applicants who study in USA will be preferred for the H1B visa
  • Since there will be no lottery system from next year (2018) and the number of applicants will be restricted, it becomes easier for applicants to get their H1B easier than now!
  • With a H1B visa on hand, one can work for three years initially and extend it for another three years as per present rules.

So, study in USA to get a world-class degree and gain practical work experience and employment for a very BRIGHT FUTURE!

What’s stopping you now? Just visit our Manhattan Review’s center nearest to you and prepare to fly!

Wish you good luck.

Work opportunities in USA

This is a ‘special’ Newsletter, especially and exclusively on work visas (H1B) in USA.

After going through all the news items on what USA could ‘do’ for students during and after their education, we thought it right to give you an unbiased update about employment opportunities with a H1B visa (work visa) after education.

Study in US

As you all know, every year there are about 85,000 visas for H1B workers from other countries. Out of this, 65,000 are for those in the General pool and the balance 20,000 are earmarked (rather, computer-marked) under ‘advanced’ category, for those who study in USA. Since there are more applicants than the available visas in both these categories, there is a “pick up” system based on a lottery. If someone’s name is picked up, he would get the H1B visa. That is how it has been working till now.

Now, the new Government plans to offer (grant) the H1B visas based on merit alone. Trump administration is looking to change this. The idea is that in the event when the number of applications exceeds the number of available slots, applications will be prioritized based on the applicant’s profile. Currently, two main criteria are being considered: whether an applicant has U.S. educational degree and what salary s/he is going to be paid. Trump’s administration is hoping that this will help keep the best and the brightest in the country and send everyone else home.

In other words, those who have the best possible education and are brightest will have the opportunity to get a work visa than based on chance. Full details are yet to be worked out. But it is hoped that by the time the next season starts on 1st April, the rules will be clearer and more definitive.

In the meantime, don’t fret over whether USA is right for you or not. Irrespective of anything and everything, BEST possible education is available in USA and employment opportunities are available both part-time and full-time during and after your education. And, for those with an American degree, opportunities are much wider throughout the world.

Fall deadlines are very close. If you delay applying with a lot of contemplation about new rules, you will miss the flight for this semester. For your own sake and to get the brightest education and experience, come and start your process at Manhattan Review without delay.

As always, we will be with you all the way.
