Education for Employment

education-for-employment

In a recent survey world-wide, students have unequivocally pointed their preference for ‘employability’ as a major factor for their higher education.

Students consider the chance for new career opportunities or for advancement in their current career path – as their primary motivation for study abroad.

Additionally, ‘soft skills’ such as Communication skills, adaptability and Networking opportunities between their alma mater and employers are some of the other factors that student increasingly look forward to get benefitted, because of their higher education abroad.

Eden Woon, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s vice-president for institutional advancement, offers an interesting insight on the relationship between university study and employability: “We are very firm in the belief that the university is not a vocational training institute. So the purpose of the university is not just to prepare you for jobs. The purpose of the university is really to give students a skill so that they can go and find a job but, more importantly, it is really to prepare students for what happens after they get a job. In other words, whether they can adapt to the job and adapt to changes that the world requires of them. That is where innovation, creativity and attitude come in.”

Which are the top universities in the world that have excellent employability rankings? Here they are:
1. Stanford University United States

2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)United States

3. Tsinghua Universitychina

4. University of SydneyAustralia

5. University of CambridgeUnited Kingdom

6. Ecole Polytechnique ParisTechFrance

7. Columbia UniversityUnited States

8. University of OxfordUnited Kingdom

9. University of California, Berkeley(UCB)United States

10. Princeton UniversityUnited States

You will notice that FIVE out of 10 universities are in USA. When are you planning to join any one of them?

Funding sources for study abroad –

Many students want to study abroad not only for the sake of employment but also with the intention of standing on their own legs, i.e. by looking to fund education on their own. What are the opportunities available to be self-sufficient to study abroad?

One attractive source of funding is ‘Scholarships’ given by universities and various trusts for meritorious students. Scholarships are a ‘grant’ that does not come with any restrictions about working or commitment. If a student has excellent academic background, top-of-the-line test scores and admission, a scholarship could be granted as a fixed sum, covering the cost of education, living and other requirements. Of course, there could be smaller scholarships too. As the name implies, scholarship is meant to honour the scholar for his achievements and to encourage him/her to do better and contribute his mite to the society.

Assistantships are another source of funding for international students. These could be in the form of Teaching, Research or Administrative. Teaching Assistants and Research Assistants are selected by Professors in order to assist them with their respective requirements. Teaching Assistants are expected to grade the Answer sheets, teach undergrad students and help with laboratory and class-room related tasks.  Research Assistants help the professor to continue and expand his research and generally help with whatever is assigned by the guide/Professor. Administrative Assistants work in the department in various roles, such as a Web Master, Clerk, Content developer etc. All these assistantships are usually paid in many forms. Some are given a complete remission from tuition payment plus a stipend to cover their living costs. Some are given a partial tuition waiver.

Finally, ‘tuition waivers’ are offered directly to some international students based on their overall application strength. Some are offered 90% waiver, some 75% and some more 50% etc. For example, University of Cincinnati offered 90% tuition waiver to their successful and meritorious CS department students at the Master’s level. Some universities also offer a fixed sum of ‘x’ dollars per semester and will extend the offer if the student maintains a consistent performance every semester.

Be careful of a trick however, that some universities throw a ‘bait’ of a small tuition waiver to almost all successful applicants, in order to ‘grab’ their dollars. These universities want international students to join them, so they could get tuition payment which is three times more than the domestic students. The more number of ‘international students’, the merrier for them! So, don’t fall prey to offers of funding irrespective of academic merit. In case of doubt, contact Manhattan Review (MR) about such universities and offers. We will be pleased to help you choose the right university to study abroad.

Grab the ‘festive’ offer –

MR has launched a great package to students who have average academics, low scores and many backlogs/repeats. We offer you unparalleled package, with which you can get into US universities that are perfect for their profile and requirements.  Most importantly, students get this at a very low cost than our regular packages. What is stopping you from grabbing this offer during the ‘Festival of Joy and Peace – Christmas’ time? Talk to our counselors who will be too happy to give you more details and make a very big change in your academic life & destiny.

On a parting note –

Our hearty condolences to the people of Tamil Nadu and all the admirers of Ms. J. Jayalalitha, who passed away after reigning over the State like a Colossus. It’s not easy to find another LEADER like her.

Wish you all a fantastic future!

Education Trumped in USA?

Education Trumped? –

l

One of the most discussed topics among our student community – especially those looking towards US – is the effect of education getting ‘trampled’ under the incoming Presidency of Trump.

How untrue! Are we not counting the birds before they are hatched?

The US Government makes 32 billion dollars per year from international students who study in USA. Nothing will displease the new Government or its President if this comes down. It is a fact that the policies as laid out by Trump are mostly towards illegal immigrants and curbing excessive issue of work visas for foreign nationals. With the waves of ‘nationalism’ sweeping world-wide, it is imperative that Trump has to consider supporting the domestic work force and accept the alternatives next.

It is also equally imperative that ‘skilled’ work force – especially in the IT field – is hard to get just like that! Even if you get some, the work force (domestic) is so pricey!! Countries like India, with its knowledgeable, competitive and highly cost-effective work force is the most attractive catch for any country, looking to cut costs and save pennies. So, if you restrict employment opportunities for international labor (aka work force), the ever-so-sensitive Indians will not consider studying in the USA, which is their penultimate step to become a part of the American dream. With India sending the second highest number of students to USA after China, it is difficult to ignore the dangers of restricting international students from studying and subsequent employment.

‘No education’ step will lead to ‘no employment’, which will ultimately lead to so many complications for the US economy. There is no way any reasonable bureaucrat or politician will affect their own country by their own actions.  In other words, as long as Indian students study hard and work harder for a cost-effective pay, they will always be in demand. And they cannot be ‘trumped’.

Don’t you agree?

If you do, start packing your bags and prepare to fly to USA for better education and brighter career, with Manhattan Review helping you all the way!

Online education USA, anyone? –

Quite frequently, we receive enquiries if international students could do online courses while they are within the USA.

As you know, online courses are those programs which the students could complete without attending college and in fact, without their presence in the city or country where the college is offering. This is becoming one of the popular forms of learning for many students across the world because of several reasons – convenience, flexibility, lower costs, better education and comfort of learning from their homes.

Most of the institutions around the world (colleges and universities) are offering online courses for students world-wide. In other words, education has become an entity without borders – whoever it may be – irrespective of age, experience and previous education – can take up a course, complete it and obtain a diploma or degree with ease and convenience.

So, what is stopping you from taking up online education in USA, when you are within USA? The rules governing a student visa (F1 Visa) are quite simple and straight-forward. If you want to study in USA, get a visa for full-time education. Since online education is literally part-time, students cannot meet the visa conditions and therefore, cannot do online courses when studying in USA full-time.

What are the rules governing full-time education in USA? If a student enrolls for 9 credit hours per semester at the Master’s level and 12 credit hours per semester at the Bachelor’s level, he is considered to be ‘in-status’ – a legal, full-time international student. Any one doing less than those prescribed here will be treated as “out of status”, which will bar them from staying back in USA to study on F1 visa.  So, literally, international students can only study full-time in US universities and cannot do online (part-time) courses.

Is there no option to do some course of interest, online? Yes, that is possible. Students can do ONE course per semester part-time or online. This course can be used towards completion of the program (Bachelor’s or Master’s) or to gain knowledge in an unrelated field.

It might be tempting to think that since the online courses are offered part-time, they might be cheaper and cost effective. Unfortunately, NO. The cost of online courses are as costly as class-room courses in most of the US universities.  This is why, though there is an option to do at least one course, international students especially from India, do not prefer to study online.

One strong reason is the fact that Indian students are hard-working. They want to immerse in the class room experience and gain full advantage from such learning, training, and networking opportunities. What can they benefit by staying back in their accommodations and learning one or more courses online? According to a majority of students, Nothing! So, full-time education within the classrooms is the most popular form of learning for our students from India.

When are you joining them in USA?

Have a great December.

US Elections: how Hillary and Trump’s views benefit Indian student’s

us-elections-how-hillary-and-trumps-views-benefit-indian-students-1

In the upcoming polls in US both the Presidential candidates views matter a lot for the student’s from India. The alumni and teachers are waiting with anxiety on what they want to implement further to take college or university education in US to a higher peak. What is their stand on educational policies? Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are the competing candidates that hold the answer to this inevitable question. It is their view on higher education policy that will decide the fate of the Indian student’s going to the US for MS and B-school enrollment.

The standpoint of Hillary Clinton is available on her campaign websites. She represents a broader perspective for higher education in US. Her focus is on:

  • Enhancing computer-science education
  • Support to the school alumni, especially teachers
  • Change in school discipline with stricter laws
  • Improving the present conditions of school buildings

It is clearly evident that on a personal level she wants to be more involved in student education. This is in stark contrast to her counterpart in the Republican Party Donald Trump. Her projection for the future growth of higher education is subsidies to renovated old buildings. She wants to place education on a higher platform. Her idea is to create modern learning, including ecological classrooms with latest state of the art technological brilliance. Video Tutorials, PPTs, more student and trainers interaction, brainstorming sessions and much more. Making higher education a less expensive affair is her targeted goal.

Trump has an altogether slanted view on educational policies. He wants to cut down the role of the federal government. His comments relate to sizing down the Department of Education. This will reflect on less spending on student’s progress. One of his campaign hoardings states that “we spend far more per pupil than any country in the world”. He wants to monopolize higher education, which will have a direct effect on the student visas. This in turn will curb Indian Student’s from gaining admission into the several schools and colleges in US.

  • Lowering Federal aid
  • More responsibility placed on state administration
  • Eyes the unions as a hindrance to growth
  • Agrees scholarships increase student debt

The above decisions will invariably play a negative role in student enrollment. Although, he speaks that steps must be taken make college education within the reach of common man. There is no comprehensive plan on his campaign agenda to enhance higher education beneficial for student’s. The student’s, especially the Indians will have to pay a high fee for admissions. This move will bring to halt huge funding to schools and colleges. Staying on university campus will become more expensive. The average budget for each student will rise.

There are mixed reactions among the student’s who are going to US. Their focus is on the outcome of the general elections, which would reveal what budget is allotted for higher education. All the dreams of overseas education is just a mirage that needs to be seen with a 20/20 vision. Ensuring a positive direction to educational goal is mostly anticipated.

Public Health/Health Administration –

Many students are looking to study Public Health or Health Administration at the Master’s level, in US/Canadian universities. Here is some information that will help you make a considered decision.

Public Health is offered as a Master of Science (MS) program, which is offered for professionals with work experience in the field of health. Most Doctors with work experience could prefer this if they have at least one year experience. However, there are universities that might admit students even without work experience. Another requirement is credentials evaluation. Universities would like to compare the qualifications of international applicants to that of their country’s qualifications and then determine if an applicant is eligible to study MPH.

Health Administration/Management, on the other hand, is offered under both MBA and MS streams. While universities offering the same under MBA stream prefers applicants with a GMAT score, those offering as an MS program accept the GRE score.  More often than not, universities prefer applicants with work experience. And, many universities require credentials evaluation.

Therefore, while embarking upon the plan to study either MPH or MHA, please make sure that you have the required qualifications, work experience and (if required) credentials evaluation report before you apply to universities.

MR can help you choose the right specialization and program to study in USA. Visit any of our 18 centers across India and discuss your plans with our experienced counselors/center managers. Entrance Qualification for Higher Education in Germany

acs-germany-2

The eligibility for higher education in Germany is connected with several requirements. As is the case with several schools and colleges in different nations. Similarly, there is a criteria laid out for the student’s who want to seek enrollment in German universities. “Abitur” is a University Entrance Qualification examination that ensures higher education enrollment in Germany. It assures the student’s above 12 years of high school education to get admission to study in any university or college in Germany. The student can choose any subject or graduation degree.

The next big question is what about international student’s who do not have German “Abitur”. They must have a similar certificate that is equivalent of it. Or else they must have some proof that shows their previous education is equal to “Abitur”. Now, to put it practically the school certificate given while leaving the institution after completion of high school studies or graduation is eligible for admission into higher education in Germany.

There are several categories for enrollment into higher education in Germany. A direct procedure entitles the student’s to apply directly and get enrolled in any German university. Indirect eligibility requires a student to undergo a year of preparatory course in Studienkolleg, then pass the university entrance exam. General category entitlement gives a student complete freedom to apply in any school and college to complete a graduation program in any of the universities in Germany.

Moreover, there is an entitlement category for a particular graduation degree, including MS, MBA or subject related graduation. The specific subject related areas recognized in Germany:

Technology and science abbreviated as (T)

Social and economy (W)

Medical and Biology or related subject area (M)

Arts (Humanities) and languages (G and S or G/S)

How can you know if the school leaving certificate in secondary education is eligible for admission into higher education in Germany?

Without any question not all school leaving certificates are accepted for admission in Germany. There are several discussions in this regard. For more information log onto www.daad.de or the Anabin website: http://anabin.kmk.org/anabin.html

In addition to this, the university website to where a student is applying gives sufficient information on the entrance qualification for higher education in Germany.  However, GRE Coaching, GMAT Preparation, SAT Training, TOEFL and IELTS are good enough for admission into German schools and colleges. All the universities in Germany accept the scores a student gets in these examinations. All you need to do is to live on your expectations and create your own space. Success will decide in which university you will get enrollment.
