What will get you admission in universities abroad

Let’s look at all the important factors that determine admission chances for an applicant like you, in universities abroad.

Factors that influence an admission outcome:

Strength of previous academic program(s) and institution(s) – There is no denying the fact that the better your college/university, the higher your admission chances are. Almost all universities abroad verify the credentials of the institution where you have studied. Based on the ranking/grade and reputation of the institution (for example, ‘A’ grade of NAAC), foreign universities make admission decisions, in addition to considering other factors.

GPAs/Percentages obtained in all post-secondary academics – While the percentages obtained in 10th and 12th classes are also considered, the most important consideration will be the student’s percentage/GPA during the Bachelor’s degree. Equally important is the number of backlogs/attempts (or the lack of them!) while basing their decision. The lesser or lack of backlogs, the higher are the admission chances.

Statement of Purpose/Essays – Perhaps the MOST important factor in making an admission decision is the SOP. Who, what and how – if these points are addressed properly, admission and financial aid chances will be much brighter. In fact, we would say that an SOP or essays will play a 50% role amongst all the factors in decision-making.  That’s why, Manhattan Review (MR) has expert editing service to get all your admission documents (such as SOP/Essays, Recommendations, CV etc.) appropriately edited to ensure applicants’ success.

GRE scores, especially in the math or quantitative section – A score of above 150 in the Quantitative section plays a vital role in decision-making of universities. Some universities require more than 155 too. At the same time, make sure to get a higher score of 150+ even in the Verbal section too. Never ignore the AWA section. For admission into top universities, an AWA score of 4.5 to 4.0 is considered to be the minimum!

Letters of recommendation – The letters of reference make or break an applicant’s chances for not only admission, but financial aid too. While it is not necessary that each of the recommender has to refer glowingly, a clear expression about the strengths and weaknesses of the applicant, along with an assessment of how the student is suitable for the program and the university will make a huge impact on the decision-making of the university.

The competitiveness of the pool of applicants for the semester – Many students are under the impression that just based on their good scores and academics will they be able to ‘surely’ get admission. Ironically, such performers are plenty across the world and many of them apply to colleges just like other applicants. As a result, there will be ‘competition’ amongst the applicant pool, which will determine admission chances. Therefore, it is always best to select universities that are not only ‘Best Fit’, but also ‘Safe’ for a profile.

English proficiency scores – Of equal importance is a good score of above 85 in TOEFL or 7 in IELTS, that will establish the fact that a student is proficient to learn further in English, at the Master’s level. However, please note that admission is possible even with scores much lesser than those mentioned above. MR will ensure that for our students!

Applicant’s additional experience – Another major factor is the applicant’s ‘relevant’ work experience in the field that he/she intends to study. This factor will certainly improve admission chances, which also gives the admission committee members the confidence that such students (with experience) could absorb the subject, enhance their learning and complete their programs quickly.

Manhattan Review takes care of each aspect that makes our students successful with their admission, aid and visa opportunities. With the famed Admission service, MR provides:

Study in US – Roadshows in India Promoting US Universities

0 (2)

The fear of losing student’s from India especially has made US universities to conduct promotional roadshows for new enrollment. Both private and state institutions are campaigning here to offer seats in different courses. For Example: Missouri State University (MSU) is attracting more pupils into it’s campus. They are doing the same in other Asian nations as well. Associate Vice-president, Colonel Robinette, MSU said, “We have 50 Indian students out of 7000 at its Springfield campus. We have welcomed Indians student’s over a decade and we will continue to do so with the same zeal and enthusiasm.” Their office in the sub-continent on the outskirts of Delhi, which is in constant touch with the parents and student’s. Here, proper counseling is given directly or through counseling agents. MSU is offering scholarships for Indians, 50 percent waiver of tuition fees for undergraduate courses, which is $11,000 (INR 7.5 lakh approximately) for student’s who deserve enrollment.

In the same manner, recently a roadshow by the University of Idaho was held with the varsity’s vice academic administrator, Dean Kohler, visiting India to spread the word about opportunities for international student’s at its campus. It is offering enrollment in civil engineering and architecture, including graduation in law. Moreover, Kohler is making use of the visit to make the student’s aware between the political views towards immigration in the US and at the University of Idaho. Kohler added, “We are partnering with some agencies and looking for partnerships with some universities.”

New Rules for Admission in US Universities

New Rules for admission in US universities

Effective immediately, for all students, US universities can no longer issue I-20s with conditional admission in the same way they did in the past.  Earlier, if a student met all of the academic requirements for undergraduate admission to, for example, Electrical Engineering but he did not meet TOEFL or IELTS requirement, conditional admission was given and list Electrical Engineering on the student’s I-20.  The student’s I-20 must now be for Intensive English program. This change may have a significant impact on a student’s ability to get a visa from the U.S. Embassy in some countries.

New Rules for admission in US universities

Students who have MET English requirement at the time they are accepted for admission

No changes.  Students will receive an academic I-20 with their academic major listed on it.  The student’s I-20 will be marked to show they are proficient in English.

Students who are accepted for academic admission but have NOT MET our English requirement

UNDERGRADUATE

If the student has been accepted to, for example, Electrical Engineering and has not met our English requirement, the student will receive an admission letter that states he is accepted to an undergraduate program in Electrical Engineering.  However, his I-20 will be for Intensive English.  We will add a comment on his I-20 that states that he is admitted to an undergraduate program in Electrical Engineering after meeting our English requirement.

GRADUATE

If the student has been accepted to, for example, a master’s program in Electrical Engineering and has not met our English requirement, the student will not receive an I-20 until he applies to Intensive English.  If the student applies to Intensive English, he will receive admission letters for both Intensive English and the M.S. in Electrical Engineering.  However, his I-20 will be for Intensive English.  Universities will add a comment that states that he is admitted to the M.S. in Electrical Engineering after meeting English requirement.

Update on German admissions – We have been receiving several enquiries about admission in German universities. This will update information on admission at various levels. For Bachelor’s level education, it is not possible to study in English medium in Germany. Therefore, if one wants to study with English as the medium of instruction, they could do so only at the Master’s level in Germany. Here are a few points for studying in Germany.

  1. Germany offers free education. However, there are universities that offer paid education also. In case if admission is expected from paid universities, the annual fee can be between 500 Euros to 12,000 Euros depending on the university
  1. Germany offers two intakes. Summer and Winter, which starts in May and September respectively. The admission and visa process takes a minimum of 10-12 months.
  1. Living expenses could be anywhere between 650 to 750 Euros per month. The total expenses for the year (8,000 to 10,000 Euros per year) have to be transferred to VFS Blocked Account before going to Germany. The student has to show these funds in a Joint account with his sponsor for at least one week, before going to the visa.
  1. Also, there will be an enrollment fee of 260 Euros payable by the student to the university, upon acceptance.
  1. The student has good academic background. But he also needs an IELTS score of 6.5 min. or 80+ in TOEFL. GRE though not mandatory, is preferred for admission in good German universities.
  1. The duration of the course could be 3 to 4 semesters depending upon the university.
